Hace bastantes años tuve la suerte de ganar el premio que Elite Miniaturas daba en un concurso extremeño. Gracias a ese premio se me entregó un caja de miniaturas de Elite en el que aparecían estas en bolsitas separadas. Una de estas miniaturas (de las cuales aún me quedan 2 o 3 por pintar) era la del oficial de la Royal Horse Artillery en torno a 1842.

La figura, magistralmente diseñada y esculpida por Juan Carlos Avila Ribadas en 54mm, toca uno de mis temas preferidos: La época colonial británica. En concreto esta obra corresponde a la retirada de las tropas británicas de Afganistan, cuyo momento paroximal se vive en la célebre batalla de Gandamark. Es la segunda obra que realizo sobre esta época y regimiento, siendo la primera una viñeta de tres figuras. En este caso la figura representa a un oficial que se encuentra en uno de los riscos rodeado y observando la progresiva llegada del enemigo que sin duda les alcanzará.

Algo de Historia


La batalla de Gandamak representa la caída de la hegemonía colonial británica. En este caso las tropas afganas acaban masacrando al ejército británico (más bien a una mezcla anglo-india) que se encontraban en Afganistan. Ya en Noviembre de 1841 la rebelión se alzó sobre la tesorería británica en Kabul y asesinó a todos los ciudadanos de origen europeo que encontraron. Esta revuelta inicial se convirtió en un levantamiento ante la no intervención del mando británico, y lo que empezó siendo un alzamiento de 300 rebeldes pasó en pocas semanas a un levantamiento de cerca de 50.000 personas contra las tropas británicas acantonadas en Kabul. Las guarniciones de todo el país fueron atacadas y cercaron el acuartelamiento británico.

Inicialmente los rebeldes no estaban cohesionadas bajo un líder, pero Akbar Khan se hizo con el mando y dio al levantamiento un motivo, proclamando una yihad haciendo jurar apoyo a la misma sobre el Corán.

Al escasear los suministros y la pólvora los supervivientes se reunieron para abandonar la ciudad sin ni siquiera esperar el apoyo de la esperada caballería británica que no terminaba de llegar. Tras un falso acuerdo de paz, ofrecido a los británicos por el líder rebelde, se alzaron contra las tropas británicas y una vez acabado con su líder los europeos y cipayos al servicio británico iniciaron una marcha hacia la ciudad de Jalabad (a 140 km de distancia) para tratar de unirse a las tropas que allí resistían el cerco. Así 700 soldados europeos, 3.800 indios cipayos al servicio de los británicos y unos 14.000 civiles (muchos de ellos trabajadores de la Compañía Británica de las Indias Orientales) escaparon del cerco.

Durante días fueron perseguidos y masacrados poco a poco por retaguardia. El día segundo un regimiento entero de cipayos se pasaron a filas del enemigo (el 29º de Shah Shuja). Los que iban sobreviviendo escapaban penosamente sin víveres camino de los acantilados donde se les dió alcance en una emboscada. 500 soldados y 2.500 civiles fueron masacrados. Un exiguo grupo de personas salieron huyendo hacia el valle de Jagdalak y tan solo algunos hombres del 44th de Infantería de Shelton lograron llegar tras las barreras que bloqueaban la huida pero fueron alcanzados y masacrados una vez que ya no disponían ni siquiera de pólvora. Esto ocurrió cerca de Gandamak el 13 de Enero de 1842, donde todos murieron, excepto el capitán James Souter, el sargento Fair y siete soldados que fueron hechos prisioneros. El único hombre que escapó fue el doctor William Brydon que herido de gravedad y montado en un poni huyo en dirección a Jalalabad, donde aún resistía la guarnición británica al mando de Robert Sale. Brydon perdió su montura por las heridas en cuanto pasó la puerta de la ciudad. Se dice que al llegar le preguntaron por el ejército británico y el respondió “Yo soy ese ejército“.

La figura


Como he comentado la figura de Elite es un soldado de 54mm que pese al transcurrir del tiempo mantiene un modelado actual muy bien esculpido por el autor y su despiece es muy sencillo. En cuanto vi la figura la imaginé representada en el ambiente invernal de Afganistan de 1842, quizás en la huida hacia Jalalabad. El oficial lleva la vestimenta típica de abrigo de cuero y cubre su rostro con un pañuelo que evita que el viento le arrebate la gorra y aminora el frio en su rostro. Mantiene la arrogancia británica y prefiere morir a entregarse después del engaño de la falsa paz ofrecida por los afganos. La nieve se muestra profusamente en la obra y la disposición de la misma a lo largo de la figura desea proporcionar la ilusión de que está nevando mientras ocurre la escena. El arbol “pelado” de la izquierda supone un contrapunto a la figura y muestra que la nieve y el viento llegan desde la derecha de la figura, ya que la nieve depositada en el suelo y el árbol se acumula más a este lado. Es pleno invierno, Enero de 1842. El oficial apenas puede sujetar su espada y mantiene la guardia baja a la espera de entrar en combate.

Desde un punto de vista técnico he utilizado las célebres “Microballoons” mezcladas con algo de barniz brillante para la recreación de la nieve. Particularmente me dan muy buen resultado y no amarillean con el paso del tiempo. En cuanto a los colores solo resaltar que la figura está pintada con acrílicos Vallejo y Jo Sonja (este último me gusta mucho para representar azules, pues queda muy mate). En este caso el metal del sable está realizado con cromo de “Model Air” de Vallejo, aunque mezclado con algo de violeta en la zona de sombras. Aunque existen técnicas de MNM no me ha parecido adecuado emplearlo en este caso.

Sobre el cuero del abrigo más o menos claro he marcado grietas y desgastes para mostrar que no es una prenda nueva. El cuero blanco del cinturón muestra sin embargo su desgaste por medio de picoteados de luz y sombra, nunca llegando al blanco perfecto.

Para finalizar tengo que comentar que esta figura ha formado parte del display sobre el Imperio Británico en la época Victoriana (1837-1901) que la Asociación Alabarda ha presentado fuera de competición en el Concurso de Leganés 2018 celebrado el pasado mes de Marzo.

Spring is still waiting to come, so I start my next Project on my workbench!

As most of you probably know, this is my favorite painting...:

It's name is "The Zaporozhian Cossacks write a letter to the Turkish Sultan" and it was painted by Ilya Tefimovich Repin ..:

Repin has been working on his Cossack project for more than 20 years. If one deals with the history of this picture in detail, one finds surprisingly many versions of the painter.

At first he drew a few dozen sketches ...:

This was followed by a preliminary study, which can be seen in Minsk (Belarus) at the National Museum ...:

In 1896 Repin painted a similar Varaiante 1.74 x 2.65 meters from the painting, which can be seen in the Museum of Fine Arts in Charkiv/Ukraine (formerly Charkov) ...:

And finally, the final version of the picture (1890-1891), 3.58 x 2.03 meters tall. As Tsar Aleksandr. III. Buy it for 35,500 gold rubles, it was the most expensive picture of its time. It hangs today in the Pushkin Museum in Saint Petersburg ...:

There is - also from Repin's hand - a very accurate scaled down version of this great original. This image was bought by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III before the First World War. Baroda for the museum he founded. It is still there today in Gujarat, India ...:

In the early autumn of 1676, the Turkish sultan Mehmed IV.

...wrote the following letter to the Zaporozhian Cossacks:
"I, Sultan and Lord of the High Door, son of Muhammad, brother of the Sun and the Moon, grandson and governor of God on earth, ruler of the kingdoms of Macedonia, Babylon, Jerusalem, great and little Egypt, king of kings, lord of lords, incomparable knight, invincible commander, hope and consolation of the Muslims, terror and great protector of the Christians, command you to give up Zaporozhian Cossacks voluntarily and without any resistance and to no longer disturb my empire by your raids.Sultan Mehmed IV "
What had annoyed the Sultan so much was that during the first Ottoman-Russian war (1676-1681), the Cossacks used the opportunity to plunder the rich and rich Crimean peninsula that was part of the Ottoman Empire.
And not only that!

The Cossacks had also the impudence to defeat a hastily enlisted Ottoman army on the lower reaches of the Dnieper destroyed.

The Zaporozhian Cossacks did not hesitate long in answering the Sultan. It has been preserved and one of the most beautiful pieces of obscene literature that we know.

Her answer letter was:

"You Turkish devil, brother and comrade of the cursed devil and Lucifer's incarnate secretary! What a knight are you to hell if you can not even kill a hedgehog with your bare ass? What the devil craves eats your army We will not have any sons of Christ under your charge, we will not fear your army, we will fight with you on land and water, your mother will be fucked!


Babylonian kitchen-boy, wheel-maker of Macedonia, goat-shepherd of Alexandria, brewers of Jerusalem, suckers of great and little Egypt, pig of Armenia, tartar goat, criminals of Podolia, hangman of Kamenetz and fool of the whole world and underworld, besides our God's fool , Grandson of the devil of Satan and the hook of our cock. Pig-eating, mare's ass, butcher's dog, unbaptized forehead, fucked be your mother!


So the Zaporozhians answered you, Glatzkop! You are not even fit to guard Christian pigs. Now we have to break up. We do not know the date because we do not have a calendar. The moon is in heaven, the year is in the book and we have the same day as you. So kiss our butt!

Need set of 120mm hands

I am in a bind...I found that I am lacking the right hand on 120mm Verlinden Apache kit. It is a kit done back in around early to mid 2000. This kit is of an Apache standing flat foot, holding a Springfield Carbine n close to his body. I have turned my house upside down and then some, but I can't find the right hand. I have the left hand which is cradling the carbine, but lack the right hand which is gripping the carbine, index finger on trigger, and thumb on hammer of Springfield.

I would appreciate direction on how to remedy this situation. I am not a sculptor. I would love to get this kit assembled and primed if someone can help me out here. I sure could use a set of 120mm hands suitable for holding a carbine. I'm willing to compensate anyone who can help me out here please? Does anyone do 120mm hands suitable for holding a carbine? Or have a set of the 120mm Verlinden hands that I could purchase please?
